Microblading vs powder brows: which question to ask first
Ask yourself this first: when I look in the mirror, do I want to see individual hairs, or a soft, even surface? Hairs point you toward microblading-style hair strokes, my Natural Brow. A soft surface points toward shading, which on my menu exists only as light shading behind strokes in Powder Soft Combo. Bring that answer, not a technique name, and we decide together.
The comparison people search for, and the question underneath it
I'm Jisun, the owner of London Brow in Seoul. Microblading vs powder brows is probably the most common comparison typed into a search bar before someone messages me. The words describe two finishes. Microblading is the everyday English word for hair strokes: thin lines placed among your own hairs. Powder brows describe a soft, shaded surface with no individual lines. Underneath the comparison is a simpler question that only you can answer: what do you want to see when you look at your brows up close?
Try it now. Stand at a mirror in daylight and look at one brow from close range. Then step back to arm's length. Up close you see hairs; from a distance you see a shape. Ask which of those two views you want the design to serve. People who care most about the close view tend to want visible hairs. People who care most about the distant view tend to want a soft, even shape.
If the answer is hairs
If you want to see hairs, the conversation starts at Natural Brow, natural hair-stroke brows. Strokes are drawn one by one among your existing hairs, in the direction they grow, and skin stays visible between them. That is what keeps the close view honest. The trade-off is that strokes cannot make a smooth, filled surface, and I would rather say that before you book than after.
Photo check: take a straight-on picture of your bare brows and zoom in. If you already have a fair amount of hair and the gaps are what bother you, strokes have plenty to work with. If you see mostly skin, strokes still work, but the result will read as a lighter, more open brow than a shaded one would, and you should want that.
If the answer is a soft surface
If you want a soft surface, you should know that my menu does not include a full powder brow. What it includes is Powder Soft Combo, soft combo for short: hair strokes plus light powder shading. The shading softens the body and tail; the front stays strokes. For many people who search for powder brows, that light version is actually the finish they were picturing, because the heavy, blocky powder look is not what they want on their own face. For some it is not enough, and I will tell you so honestly.
Mirror check with makeup: fill one brow lightly with powder the way you normally would and leave the other bare. Look from arm's length. If the filled side is what you like and the bare side looks unfinished to you, you lean toward shading. If the filled side looks heavier than you want, you lean toward strokes with at most a light shade behind them.
Bring the answer, not the technique name
Technique names travel badly between studios and between languages. The word microblading means different things in different places, and powder brows range from a faint mist to a solid block. What travels well is a description of what you see and want. It varies from person to person, which is exactly why I would rather hear your mirror answer than your search term.
Consultations are translation-assisted over WhatsApp. A message like this works: 'Up close I want to see hairs, but my middle looks patchy. I think I want strokes with a little softness.' Or: 'I like a soft, even shape from a distance and I do not mind fewer visible hairs.' Either one tells me where to start the sketch, and we decide the menu together in the room.
Before your consultation
- Look at one brow up close, then from arm's length, and decide which view matters more to you.
- Zoom into a bare-brow photo: plenty of hair with gaps favors strokes; mostly skin means you should want an open, lighter look if you choose strokes.
- Fill one brow lightly with powder and leave the other bare, then compare from arm's length.
- Write your answer as what you want to see, not as a technique name.
Common questions
Do you do powder brows?
Not as a separate menu. The shaded finish I offer is the light powder shading inside Powder Soft Combo, which keeps hair strokes at the front. If you want a fully shaded brow with no strokes, tell me in the consultation and we will talk about whether my menus fit.
Which is better for a first eyebrow tattoo, microblading or powder?
Neither is better by default. If you want to see hairs up close, start with Natural Brow. If you want a softer body, start with soft combo. We compare both on the sketch next to your bare brow before you decide.
