Combo brows vs microblading: how the finish differs

Jisun Yoo, owner of London Brow · · Editorial principles

The finish differs in what fills the space between the lines. With microblading-style hair strokes alone, my Natural Brow, skin stays visible between strokes and the brow reads as hair. With combo brows, my Powder Soft Combo, a light powder shade sits behind the strokes so the body reads softly filled. Neither is better. Bring a photo of the finish you like and we decide together.

The same strokes, a different background

I'm Jisun, the owner of London Brow in Seoul. People ask me to compare combo brows and microblading as if they were rival methods, but on my menu they share their most important part. Both begin with hair strokes drawn among your own hairs, following their direction. Natural Brow stops there. Powder Soft Combo, soft combo for short, adds light powder shading behind the strokes. The strokes are the same; what changes is the background they sit on.

To see the difference, you need to look between the lines, not at them. In a close photo of a strokes-only brow, the space between strokes is skin. In a close photo of a combo brow, that space carries a soft tone, lightest at the front and a little fuller toward the tail. From across a room the two can look alike. Up close and in profile they do not.

What strokes alone look like, and who tends to like it

A strokes-only finish keeps the texture of hair everywhere. The front looks like a few hairs growing up, the body shows lines crossing and leaning, and the tail thins into single strokes. It suits people who want their brows to look untouched, who already have a reasonable amount of hair, and who dislike any hint of a makeup look. Its limit is honest: it cannot produce a soft filled surface, because lines always leave skin between them.

Mirror check: brush your brows and look at the middle in daylight. If you can see skin between your hairs and that does not bother you, you already live comfortably with the texture strokes alone would give. If the skin showing through is the thing you cover every morning, keep reading.

What strokes plus shading look like, and who tends to like it

A combo finish keeps the hair texture at the front and softens the body. The shading is light, closer to a brow that has been brushed with a little powder than to a drawn-on block. It suits people who want a fuller body without losing visible hairs, who wear powder in their brows most days, or whose middle and tail are sparse enough that strokes alone would leave a patchy surface. Its limit is also honest: it is not a full powder brow, and I will say so if your reference photo is one.

Photo check: take your reference and zoom in on the middle. Lines with skin between them is a strokes-only photo. Lines over a soft tone is a combo photo. No lines at all, one even shade, is a powder-style photo that neither of these menus reproduces. Knowing which of the three you are holding saves a lot of back and forth.

Choosing between the two, and what to say

I do not decide this from the menu name, and I ask you not to either. In the consultation we look at your hair in daylight and sketch the line first. Then we talk about what sits between the strokes: nothing, or a light shade. Some people come for combo and leave with Natural Brow because their hair already fills the body. Some come for strokes and add shading once they see how sparse the middle is. It varies by person, and the sketch settles it.

Consultations are translation-assisted over WhatsApp. Try: 'I am deciding between soft combo and Natural Brow. I like visible hairs at the front. My middle is sparse. Here is a photo of the finish I like.' Name the finish, not the technique, and let the photo do the rest.

Before your consultation

  • Look between the lines in your reference photo, not at them: skin, a soft tone, or one even shade.
  • Brush your brows and check whether the skin showing through in the middle is something you live with or cover every day.
  • Decide whether you want visible hairs at the front in either case; both of my menus keep them.
  • Message with the finish you like and one bare-brow photo, not a technique name.

Common questions

Which is more natural, combo or microblading?

Both can look natural, because both keep hair strokes. Strokes alone keep hair texture everywhere. Combo softens the body with a light shade. Which looks more natural on you depends on how much hair you have and how much skin you are used to seeing.

Can I have shading only in the tail?

Where the shading sits is part of the design, and in soft combo it is already lightest at the front and fuller toward the tail. Tell me where you want softness and we draw it on the sketch so you can see it before deciding.
