Men’s brows / BROW JOURNAL
Why a man's brow gets a touch heavier toward the tail
On a man's brow I let the width grow slightly toward the tail, by about a millimeter, and finish it that way. A woman's brow usually tapers to a fine point; a man's brow that tapers the same way reads as styled. Weight at the back keeps the brow grounded and the face calm. Compare that with how your own brow tapers today.
Compare your current taper
I'm Jisun, the owner of London Brow in Seoul. Start with your own brow in daylight. Look at the width just before the arch, then at the width near the end. Almost every natural brow narrows toward the tail, because the hairs there are shorter and sparser, and most men have never questioned it. Now notice where the narrowing starts. If it starts right after the arch, the back half of your brow is already a thin line, and that is usually the part people describe as weak or missing.
Take a straight-on photo with the hairs unbrushed so the taper shows as it is. I usually look at the back half of a man's brow first, because that is where the men's design differs most from what his hair does on its own.
Why the opposite taper reads masculine
A brow that tapers to a fine point is the shape of a styled women's brow. The point draws the eye along the brow and off the face. A brow that keeps its weight to the end does the opposite: it holds the eye and gives the face a settled, steady look. So one of the rules I follow for men is that the brow grows a touch heavier toward the back, by about a millimeter, and the finish keeps that weight rather than thinning out. The millimeter is an estimate from how I work, not a measurement I promise. It varies by person, and on some faces the difference is barely there.
How the weight is built
The weight comes from the two edges. The upper line runs straight from the arch to the tail. The lower line keeps a very slight curve beneath it. Because the top is a line and the bottom gently lifts and returns, the distance between them opens a little as the brow moves back. The strokes in that back section still lie flat, in the direction tail hairs grow, with space between them. So the end has weight without being a block: a soft edge that happens to be slightly wider than the arch. If you want to see the idea on paper, draw a straight line and a shallow curve beneath it that meet at the front; the gap between them is the men's taper.
Heavier is not darker
Weight is width, not tone. If the back of the brow were also the darkest part, it would look like a smudge. The color for men starts lighter than any reference photo, and it stays even along the brow, so the heavier tail reads as more brow rather than more makeup. Look at the reference you like and ask whether its tail is darker than its arch; if it is, that darkness is the part I will not copy. I take the width from a reference and leave the darkness behind.
In the consultation
Consultations at London Brow are translation-assisted over WhatsApp, so ask it as a comparison: 'Show me the width of the sketch at the front, at the arch and at the tail.' In the mirror you should see the tail a touch wider than the arch and the color the same along the whole brow. If the back looks like a block, or thins to a point, say so before anything is fixed. The taper is the easiest men's rule to see once you know to look.
Before your consultation
- In daylight, compare the width of your brow just before the arch with the width near the end.
- Note where the narrowing starts; a brow that thins right after the arch is read as weak at the back.
- Separate weight from darkness: the tail is slightly wider, not darker.
- Ask to see the sketch's width at the front, the arch and the tail.
Common questions
Why does a man's eyebrow get thicker toward the end instead of thinner?
A brow that tapers to a point is the shape of a styled women's brow and leads the eye off the face. Weight kept to the end holds the eye and reads steady. So I let a man's brow grow about a millimeter wider toward the back, as a rule I follow, and finish it that way.
Will a heavier tail look like a dark block?
Not if the color stays even and light. The weight is width, made by a straight upper line and a slightly curved lower line opening toward the tail. The strokes there lie flat with space between them, so the end is a soft edge, slightly wider than the arch.
