Men’s brows / BROW JOURNAL
First time: 'will it look too dark?'
For a man's first brow, the color I start from is lighter than any reference photo he brings. That is a rule I follow for men's brows, not a reaction to nerves. Reference photos set the shape only. If the dark, drawn-on look is what you fear, say so in your first message, and bring that photo as well as the one you like.
Why the worry is reasonable
I'm Jisun, the owner of London Brow in Seoul. 'Will it look too dark?' is the most common first question I get from men. It is a reasonable question. The brows you notice on other men are the ones that went dark, because a brow that reads natural does not register as done at all. So your sample of what an eyebrow tattoo looks like is biased toward the failures. The fear is useful. It tells me your limit before I have drawn a line.
One men's record from the first London Brow in 2020 carries exactly this worry in its caption: a first session, and a fear that the brows would turn out dark, with the strokes kept natural. I keep that record because the question has not changed.
The color rule for men
The rule I follow is simple. Whatever reference you bring, the starting color is lighter than it. Photos are lit, often edited, and viewed on a bright screen; a brow that looks right there is usually darker than a brow needs to be next to a face in daylight. The reference is used for shape only. Color is chosen separately, against your own brow hair and the hair on your head, in the mirror. It varies by person, so the exact tone is decided with you and not from the photo.
There is a particular reference I see often: a very dense, very dark men's brow, the kind that looks drawn with a marker. I will happily take the shape from it. I will not take the color. That brow is the look most first-timers are afraid of, and they are right to be.
Shape does more against the dark look than color
Darkness is only half of the drawn-on signal. The other half is shape, and the men's rules handle it quietly: a straight upper line from the arch to the tail with no bump, a tail kept shorter than a woman's, and a width that grows slightly toward the back instead of tapering to a point. A brow with those lines reads as a man's brow even before you think about tone. Check your own in a relaxed photo: if the top edge already has a peak, that peak, not the color, is what would read as drawn. When shape and a light color work together, there is very little left for anyone to notice.
Bring two photos, not one
Send the photo you like and the photo you fear. The first gives me a shape; the second gives me a boundary. Add a straight-on daylight photo of your own brows with the hairs unbrushed, because the design is built from the hair you have. If you want, write one line under each: 'this shape', 'never this dark'. That is a complete first-time brief, and it is more useful than any technique name.
In the consultation
Consultations are translation-assisted over WhatsApp, so short sentences carry best. Something like: 'First time. I am worried it will look too dark. Shape like photo one, never like photo two.' In the room, ask me to hold the chosen tone next to your hair in daylight before anything is fixed, and to show you the sketch with your face relaxed. If the sketch already looks like more than you want, say so. Lighter is where we start, and we can always talk about it from there.
Before your consultation
- Send the reference you like for shape and the one you fear as a boundary.
- Add a straight-on daylight photo of your own brows, hairs unbrushed.
- Write one line under each photo: this shape, never this dark.
- Ask to see the chosen tone next to your hair in daylight before anything is fixed.
Common questions
Will my first men's eyebrow tattoo look too dark?
The color I start from for men is lighter than any reference photo, as a rule. The photo gives me the shape; the tone is chosen against your own hair in the mirror. Tell me the dark look is your fear and it becomes the boundary of the design.
Should I bring a photo of the brow I do not want?
Yes. It is as useful as the one you like. The photo you like sets the shape; the photo you fear sets the limit. Both together make the first conversation short and clear.
